Hi,

I've always used steam oil on 2" engines. I also use it on my 1" minnie.

Although not a 2" owner I certainly would advise against using engine oil, steam oil is designed to mix with the steam and atomise into it, which engine oil wouldn't- this is some of the techincal details on Morris Steam Oil

"Morris Steam Cylinder oil 680 - Compound Steam Cylinder Oils 680, are for use in most Locomotives and Stationary engines working with either saturated or superheated steam.

They are produced from special cylinder stock treated with fatty compounds to provide superior lubrication even if wet conditions are encountered. The fatty compounds form emulsions which spread the oil on the internal surfaces, providing a strong lubricating film where needed to protect bores and valves. This is particularly important where very wet steam has to be handled at the cylinders, or water treatment chemicals are carried with the steam.

ISO 680 is for use with saturated & light super heat steam upto 250psi.

In addition to cylinders, these oils are recommended for valve chests, slides, linkages and general lubrication, by means of mechanical applicators, atomisers or oil can."

Ello Graeme,

Have a word with Monsieur Steve n see if he's any steam oil floating about. But generally yup, use steam oil, normal engine oil will emulsify (snot up like mayo) once the water hits it.

It's as thick as treacle and lasts quite some time
