new factory progress so far...

Post  craig@STW on Tue 12 Apr 2011, 12:49 am

yes we have started moving cheers

we are still running the milling machines and doing manual work for another two weeks to get the next showmans/road loco kit done, but some of the stock items are starting to move over to the new place and preparations are underway to get the building ready for the machines etc.

first off is the office.

three desks for Isabel, Steve and dean. deans is the largest one at the back !!!

and looking back from deans desk... you can see a fourth desk in the corner for "extra" people

along from the office is the conference room...

and on the ground floor we have a store room and "show model" room...

and now onto the shop floor...

lets take you in the back way...

into the material and kit storage area...

this will be used for stock material, material handling and pre-packed kits.

looking to the left, you can see the storage racking going up...

and we will have these racks for storing 3meter bars...

through the large doors to the right and we enter the main shop floor...

so lets jump up onto the mezzanine you can see at the back and look back towards the way we came...

down this side will be the main machine shop...

and on the other side the welding bay and manual area, you can see the welding bay being built...

on top of the mezzanine we are standing on will be the part storage area...

and underneath will be the packing area and control models.

we need to get the main floor cleaned and painted and the electricians need to come in and fit the power points for the machines. also the compressed air system needs fitting. all this needs to be done by the 28th April as that's when we close down production and start moving machines !!!

Craig,
Can you find out when the plan to start painting the floor is.

I am more than happy to give up a day to help but need to know if the days you are painting are the days i'm off work.

Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the offer.

If everything stays to plan the floor is being cleaned Wednesday & Thursday and then being left to dry Friday. We then intend to put the initial sealing coat down on Saturday with the first coat of 2 pack down on Sunday.

Cheers

Dean

well we have all been slaving away painting the floor this weekend Neutral but on a plus side we are all now high as kites cheers cheers

the pink/brown areas are the undercoat that was done on Saturday and the grey is top coat number 1...

you can also see that the brickwork of the welding bay is done and the electrics have been started.

dont be fooled by this pic, dean is just using the roller to lean on as he talks on the phone Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

more good news is that the new sign is up. they are coming back to do some "tweaking" but i think you will agree it looks very impressive...

yes we have been moving this week cheers a lot of work has been going on over the last two weeks to get the new building ready. new electrics in, compressed air system in, extractor system in etc.

but this week it's time to move the big stuff...

looking at this photo, the cardboard marks the approximate position of the CNC machines...

and a few manual machines and the control models are in place to help gauge the amount of space they need...

the first machines in place in the new building...

followed by the mills...

so this is where we are first thing today, with just the large lathe and mill and steve's machines to move over. then we can start sorting out.

the old place is looking empty now, but still as filthy Rolling Eyes

all the machines are now in place and "usable".

the coolant tanks are missing in the photos, these have all been cleaned, leaks fixed and all pipes replaced.

some of us will be working over the weekend getting the DNC system in place (links the machines to the PCs), fitting coolant trays, filling with coolant, loading machines with tools and having another quick wipe over and clean up.

the packing area started going in late Friday.

the plan is to get all the systems in place and all the little fixes done before production starts up again otherwise things may never get done, however i would imagine the showman's/road loco cylinder blocks will be on the mill quite soon.

I'd be the first to admit the old place is/was a mess, but then its hard to invest time in a place when you dont plan to stay there, and time is money as they say.

one of the machine engineers summed it up the other day when he said "you can't polish a turd" lol! lol!

Mythbusters actually tried several different types of fresh pooh and discovered that with time and effort you can in fact polish various turds..... Very Happy Very Happy

Without sounding pushy will the new factory and layout help streamline production at all?? I assume it would help to make it easier to run stuff through

I'm not sure it would be quicker, but getting rid of all the clutter will certainly make it easier. most of the system will stay the same with the T-card board controlling what, where, when and by whom.

the thing you have to be careful of is making sure jobs don't go to packing before they are complete, and sometimes it not obvious as to whether they are or not. a job should not really be packed until its "signed off"

more progress on the CNC machines over the weekend. the DNC system is nearly in, all dodgy electrical connections repaired, more in-depth cleaning done under the slide way covers, fresh coolant in half the machines and tooling should start going in tomorrow.

been warming them up today with a little program that gets all the tables moving around and the spindles running. just helps to get the slides oiled up after the jet washing Shocked
