looking fantastic Tony,

What make of paint are you using and what shade of red are you using for the crankshaft and inside the hornplate/spectacle plates?

Thanks

Paint

Post  Tony King on Mon 17 Oct 2011, 8:08 am

Hi Kev,
Been away for a couple of days, so only just seen your question re paints!!
Most of the main colours are Craftmaster paint, the maroon being "Dreelan Crimson", however the red on crank & castings etc is B&Q one coat exterior gloss........ Mail Box Red!!! It's non drip jel type paint & I have applied it with a bush, which seems to work quite well!! Three top coats gives an amazing shine!!
Just looking at other parts of the forum I see a debate about varnishing............. It was my intension to to spray parts with lines on with Craftmaster varnish, as recommended by Craftmaster. Their varnish is specially forulated not to "yellow" so should give the protection without loss of colour brightness & as they say it's easier to re varnish than repaint, provided it's done before the varnish deteriorates & cracks.
My wheels are all brushed & I'll be brushing the varnish on them, when I actually do the lining!!!!
Regards
Tony

Thanks Tony,

Im going to give my lining a coat of craftmaster varnish to protect it.

Does anyone know the shade of red the full size versions are painted?

thanks

Tone's Showman!

Post  Tony King on Wed 23 Nov 2011, 9:06 am

Hi all,
I'm trying for the second time to upload more pics of progress, but having problems with my internet connection being soooooo slow!!
Took me an hour last time, only to find that the forum was "under maintenance" or something, so lost the lot!!
OK here goes:-

This shows the latest kit bolted on, boy what a difference it makes to the size of my workshop!! (It just got smaller!!)

Having test fitted everthing, took it all to bits & got to work with the flap wheel:-

Then, finished off with orbital sander:-

On with the primer:-

On with the undercoat:-

The real bit of "bling" on the front!!:-

Here's the name!! Unfortunately, I read the warning about "Brasso", too late, so will have to repaint!!:-

A quick test fit of undercoated bits:-

And last, the bits going together:-

Starting to take on its own unique identity, I'm delighted with how easy & effective STW have made the building process, absolutely every hole lined up perfectly in this kit.
I'm now painting eccentrics, so will post pics of them when paint has dried & they are back in place.

(Any you RL guys having second thoughts?................Ha Ha!!)

Regards,
Tony

Looking wonderful.

Did you put the smoke door pin in upside down before fitting the extension?

Door pin!

Post  Tony King on Wed 23 Nov 2011, 10:49 am

Hi Lynn,
Thanks for kind comments.
I decided, after great thought!! to simply unbolt the hinges from the smoke box ring. I've used S/S fixings with loads of copper slip, so hopefully they'll come undone easy enough??

Tony

I sPotted that on the showmans at GDSF. Went home and drilled a hole for a split pin and fitted the door with the pin put in from the bottom. Not sure well need to take the door off, but thought it would be better safe than sorry. Very Happy

Tony thats a beast there my friend I cant believe how big the thing is.. I see you found out how destructive brasso can be! just drop the plate in some paint thinners and repaint it and it'll be fine.. use some good silver polish and dont use a polishing wheel either as this can burn the paint too.. just take it nice and slow and polish it up by hand when your not busy building the rest of it..I use a small polishing wheel that you get with dremels just in my finger and not on the dremel. works well to help polish up the brass..

sorry for the delay on the boiler wash plates mate they are painted and waiting for polishing this weekend. so they will be with you next week..

keep up the good work..

Jo

Ps I now want one of my own.... Sad

oooooh Jo now that's an offer I bet you will be thinking about all weekend and discussing in depth with your other half. I have just put the platform on the showman and I got to say its big, makes other 4" engines look small.

WHAT TO DO

Hi Tony

Marvelous. Looking very nice indeed. Managed to get the eccentric straps painted over last weekend and that almost wiped me out. You are now well ahead as I do not even have kit 3a in stock. Keep up the good work. It is depressing me nicely. lol

Did you do the nameplates yourself or are they from Northburrell?

Hi lynn,
I'm sure it'll not take you long to to catch up............ Hope your feeling stronger now!
Name plates........ I got them from Dianne Carney over a year ago when I ordered name plates for my Agricultural engine (Long before I knew Jo could do them.)
Thanks for nice comments.

Tony
