Cylinder Block Pattern & Cores

Post  Steam Traction World on Mon 23 Aug 2010, 10:57 am

Hi All,

Last Thursday Steve and I visited the company producing the cylinder block castings to check the pattern and cores prior to production commencing. About half a dozen small changes need to made to some of the cores as there really isn't much room for metal to flow and some of the wall thicknesses left no machining allowances but for a first attempt we were very very impressed indeed.

We are hoping to have a second block cast soon so we can cut it up and confirm everything is okay. Then production will commence.

Just so you are aware of how complicated this is, the casting company has said that every block will have to be cast and machined as if it were an individual.

They have also said they will only be able to produce:

1 block per day!!!

This is due to how hot they need the molton metal to be when its cast and if they do more than one per day it will have cooled too much before pouring the second one.

We better get a move on then...........

That' a work of art in it's own right...

One a day isn't to bad when you think about it..
If each one needs to be machined as an individual then you'll have a day on each.. Very Happy Shocked Cool ..

Seriously guys i have no doubt the blocks will be first class.
your taking each step very cautiously and as has already been said on the other thread i've no doubt after this engine is complete you'll of convinced some of the non believers into those wishing they owned one...

See you at GDSF on the Saturday..

steam passages look nice and large, should be a free running engine!
Are the boxes on the side and underneath the finished casting, reservoirs, to feed metal into the cores?

Hi Tim

The 'boxes' on the side and underneath are purely registers to hold the sand cores inplace. There is an outside chance that we may have the second casting with us at Dorset.

Steve
