the boiler plates arrived this week...

and we are already prepping them on the machine...

so with the plates now here, the boiler barrels have gone up on the 4th axis mill. it really is a tight fit !!!

i've had to make a fixture with little rollers to support the end of the tube...

had some good news on the boilers...

the boilers have to be inspected at various stages of manufacture by "them that know" !!! and until we get the OK on them we cant move on to the next stage. the good new is that the first stage of "tacking together" has been given the OK and we can now more on to some proper welding up of things cheers

im sure Steve has a facility in solid works that gives an approximate weight of any part, but i may have dreamt it.

im sure we can stick one on the scales if not.

Unless I'm remembering it wrong I seem to recall being told about 100kg for the Road Loco and 120kg for the Showmans.

Looking forward to it all arriving shortly... I have now caught up with everything outstanding, wheels all lined nameplates painted and polished. Nothing left to do but wait now.... Shocked Shocked

Possible non delivery by couriers

Post  lynnr on Mon 10 Jan 2011, 11:15 am

Hi Craig

In case you do not send the boilers out by courier what are the dimensions of the showman boiler so I can start planning and reserving resources if they will not fit in the car.

That should fit in the boot without any problem.

Fitting it in the boot is one thing, getting it in and out is another problem!! Razz

It will fit in my S-Max too and the access is not to bad, all flat and low floor, I get my wife-s large mobility scooer in reasonable easily. However, the tailgate would be in the way of a fork lift truck putting it in and would possibly not even allow access for my engine hoist recently purchased to assist with the "heavier" parts Embarassed

Still look forward to the challenge, I will post some photos of our road loco - Blackbeard - at some point.

good progress on the boilers...

fire hole rings before wielding into the boilers...

finished boilers waiting for machining...

and the first boiler has been machined cheers mark has spent the last few days making all the jigs and fixtures and slowly working his way through the machining of the first one. once the first one is out of the way the rest will follow thick and fast

mark fitting the reference plate to the boiler, this basically sits where the cylinder will sit and gives the correct machining width of the finished boiler mounting lugs and a reference point to work from to get the correct positions of the mounting holes...

first one on the machine...
