Don't forget to weigh in all the swarf for scrap! You must make literally tonnes of swarf in a year.

good news...

we had 8 more castings arrive and mark has actually started machining the first batch cheers

the first op was a minor prepping op and the second involves the machining of the main bores and saddle...

hopefully this op will be done before the machine needs moving.

Tell me, do you guys ever get nervous machining these very expensive castings?
I think I'd be a complete nervous wreck by the time I'd got to the 5th machining operation!!!!
They do look rather lovely, so keep up the good work!
Best regards & see you all at the open week end.............. Might be able to collect a cylinder???

to answer that... yes. trust me, we don't always get things right Rolling Eyes

so far on these, the only problems have been with the actual castings themselves (thin bits etc). we do have one that we use as the "set up" block to help us avoid these. run the program, adjust etc. i think we can say this one may be scrap by the end of the run.

if any are scrap due to casting faults we dont have to pay for them Cool

over all the years we have been doing this there have been times when the whole job has been a balls up and needed to be scrapped !!!! Shocked

okay I have got to say this. Each time I look at this section of the forum I am always impressed by the work STW put into getting things right. I am not just saying this because I have one of the DCC but I am really impressed; it is a real journey you guys are taking us on. Yesterday I spoke to the sprayer who is doing my wheels and he said that people visiting his workshop have looked at the wheels and are impressed by the quality of the machining. I know this is not related to this part being manufactured or part of this forum but well done and keep this up as it's really important for me watching the parts being developed; it adds interest to each kit I receive.

spent yesterday trying to get the cylinder block on the 4th axis so we can drill all the mounting holes in one hit. the main concern was whether the machine could cope with the weight of the block and repeat the hole pattern accurately.

this will save us a huge amount of time on machining.

seems to be working so far...

is this for the control model or for one us lucky sod's? Smile
can you please post some pics of the steam chest in place on the boiler (similar to the last few seconds of the youtube clip?)

yeah i can do more clips, but it all takes time out of the day when i could be doing other things. i'll try and get more done.

i will post the pics separately and i have proper production updates to post before the end of the weekend Cool

we will be using this process for all the blocks, but not just yet. as you can probably make out this block has "set up only" on it and is the scrap "setting" block that has a casting fault.

the main reason i did this now was to check that we could mount the blocks solidly, the 4th Axis could cope with the weight, and the holes would be accurate. otherwise we are going to have to set up each "hole angle" separately, and thats going to take some time.

Any news on the first batch of cylinders that had been fairly extensively worked up to now? Are they due to go soon? I had heard a little rumour they were close to being ready for despatch Cool Cool
