well if you look back at the photos of the laser cuts you will see the tank "front and back" plates with a big semi-circle cut in them.

these fillets create that lip which is bent and curved so would be hard to form any other way. they also provide the lip for the rivets/bolts.

we had similar things on the tender but these were turned. the radius on these is so large that it would be like turning a spaghetti hoop, it would just get crushed by the chuck, so we have had to mill them in sections.

they are not finished yet but i should get the other side done soon

got the other side of the fillets on the machine now, as you can see, this side has a radius...

and this is where they go. they form the centre curve on the front and rear sections of the tank. the part that goes around the boiler...

and this is the section of the tank top that goes in the curve...

and the end sections for the tank top...

the tank bottom...

and the tank front and back...

the good new is, so far this seems to be going together very well with no "design issues" in the sheet work at all. fingers crossed Rolling Eyes

the first trial assembly of the bent plates is nearly together so i should have a photo for you on Monday Cool

Hey Craig

What's this about no "design issues" fingers crossed? Mad We never have design issues. Lets hope you lot in Production make it to the design. Fingers crossed! Laughing

managed to get some photos of the half assembled tank although they are a little strange looking.

we found the best way to work on the control model was to stand it up-right, so it sort of makes the pictures hard to make out but hopefully you can see the progress we are making.

still going together well with no problems, design or production wise Razz lol! lol! i bet it will be packing that lets us down again Wink

The attention to detail is just fantastic, I've said it before & I'll say it again, these engines are going to be the best out there when they're built. cheers

started work on the stars now. the brass blocks are cut to shape, drilled and tapped in the front of the vice and then bolted to the steel block and cut with a 45 degree cutter in the rear of the vice...

only 500 or so to make...

the first 8 bolted to a cover...

and fitted to the end of the tank...

clinch nuts pressed in the tank ends...

tool boxes...

first tank wielded and fitted to control model ready for the show this weekend...

generally speaking it is best to test build, take it apart, paint and final build but thats not always possible on every part.

most people just do as they feel and the paint finishes vary quite a bit as well, there are no strict rules, just a few thing to try and avoid Cool

busy week trying to get this kit done. Shocked

all the stars are now done and enough panels have been wielded to get dispatch out. still a few last minute holes to drill and tap. to be honest i think it will be going out early next week.

front/rear panels with fillets wielded in...

top panel sections welded together...

trying to get the control model tank fully bolted up, lots of little rivet bolts to play with pale ...

we are very close to getting this out now. we had to linish up all the welding and the control model needed to be fully built up so we could get the fasteners right.

this should go out tomorrow or Wednesday Cool

Just a small question.

Will there be a name plate that goes on the tool box?
I dont see the holes drilled for this or do these holes get drilled by us.

Cheers

Nick

yes there will be a name plate and im sure the holes will be there, i'll check in the morning.

unfortunately we have been let down again, this time by the casting people, so we are sending the kit out without the castings and they will be sent on as soon as they arrive. don't worry, there will be plenty to keep you busy without them Shocked

Cheers Craig,

I'm not looking overly forward to tightening all those nuts or sealing the whole box but it's all part of the experience as they say.

well as you work your way around tightening all the nuts the ones you started with come loose, so its a case of going around again and again till its all pulled together. Shocked
