showman's kit 3

Post  craig@STW on Thu 13 May 2010, 1:23 pm

yes we had a casting delivery today cheers

some of the nameplates have arrived and the chimney base castings, the rest are due in another two weeks.

although this may not seem like a lot, it means we can finally start work on the kit without it going out incomplete.

the kit folder has been issued and i will start ordering material tomorrow.

we need these so we can drill the mounting holes in "appropriate" places and then match the hole location on the smoke box door.

we still plan to send the horn-plates out as the next kit and the laser cuts are due in in the morning, so keep your fingers crossed again people

these are the small nameplate bosses. these need drilling to match the small nameplates then we will have the smoke-box door to drill to match the large nameplate.

Now thats starting to look a bit sexy.... Embarassed Embarassed depending on what floats your boat etc but for us "sad flat cap wierdos!" Shocked (not my words!!! but a description from someone dear to me Mad Mad ) its getting quite exciting. Just to allow to plan financially does that mean we might see Kit 3 going out towards the end of this month?? Not trying to push just want to ensure funds are in the right place etc to pay for it, cos work seems to be going along at a pace.

Kev.

yes Kev, we do hope to get kit 3 out at the end of the month (seeing as the last kit really should have gone out late may not early June) and are really doing everything we can to get the bits done that are in so far. we are still waiting for the smoke box material to turn up and the laser cuts for the chimney, but as everything else is just about done, we should have no problem meeting the deadline if the bits turn up. but as always, no 100% promises until im sure we can do it.

good news is, we had the inner rims for the rear wheels arrive today and we are told the outer rim should be with us by the end of the week. Cool

we are very conscious of the recent delays and comments and really do want this to be an enjoyable experience for all involved.

PS: i know what you mean about the "sexy". mini parts and bicycles do it for me Embarassed Embarassed

Once uopn a time it was mini parts for me too, long centre branch exhausts and water heated inlet manifold with 1 3/4" SU carbs...... drunken Then it was Detroit Pig Iron when I had matured a bit.... Chevvy 350 4 bolt mains blocks and Holley 900cfm carbs with Edelbrock inlets and hedders....... affraid Then I saw the error of my ways and progressed to steam from small scale garden railways to the current line up... But it wont be full size though... too much hassle in transporting, storage, maintainance etc.

Saw a Road Loco at the weekend Lord Nelson which was converted back from a showmans which allowed me to understand the complexity of the hornpaltes and where things go.... Some of the later kits are going to be a real challenge to build and assemble affraid affraid

However it will be worthwhile in the end as it will be a stunning and rare beast at rallies. sadly patience is NOT one of the qualities my wife chose me for... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Which just makes it painful at the moment. When we get to the point where the chassis is rolling perhaps early in the new year then I can just sneak off to the garage and sit and gaze at it or even sit on it making chuffing noises Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

more progress with this kit. the smoke box rings and the door hinges are started/done. the hinge blocks are just prototype ones and we need to make them a little bit longer (you may be able to spot a couple of washers packing them up to the correct height)...

very close to getting this finished now cheers

i got the smoke-box on the 4th axis mill today and full production will start in the morning. here's the first one...

the smoke-boxes will take a while to do so we have plenty of time to finish the last few parts. this includes rolling the chimneys (already started), final "scooping" of the chimney base to match the smoke-box (already started), 2nd op on 1000's of rivets (already started) and wielding the lug on the end of the dart.

can't see this going out this week but it should be done next week Cool

Does that mean leaving you on Friday or getting to us for Friday? Just that it will be arriving on Monday otherwise, would have been nice to have the weekend to start prepping etc.

im going to say "leaving us" on friday rather than give you false hope. there is a slight chance it could go tomorrow but it's very very slight.

we are waiting for some longer bolts to mount the perch bracket (don't want a repeat of last month Embarassed ) and these are due in on thursday. if they turn up at 3pm, the kit will be going nowhere till friday.

the chimneys take a long time to "get right" but these should be finished today (wed)

if it don't go friday i'll probably be sacked Rolling Eyes

no, the extra parts will be done later. i'll have to talk to Steve to find out when.

quick up-date, some of the road-loco kits will be going today and we have been told that the rest of the "long bolts" will be with us at 9 o'clock in the morning so we should be sending all the other kits out Thursday Smile
