Post  miller on Wed 05 May 2010, 12:06 am

going to be producing this kit over the next couple of months.

it's the optional drop down sides for the 1st batch of fodens.

production will be limited to ten kits. not sure if we are providing the wood or not.

more details later

Excellent Craig Cool should make the foden look a bit better, i always think it looks half naked without the sides.

i spoke to Steve about this today and he seems to think we will probably supply the metal work along with drawings for the wooden parts. we could then give customers the option of having the wood supplied by us at a later date if they feel it's beyond them to make it themselves. seems like the best option to me and will allow us to get the kit out the door quite soon.

Hi Mark
I would have thaought that your problem was finding any wood never mind ash. Maybe if the wind wasn't so strong in Shetland you would have trees that grew taller than 4 feet!!!
I have had many a rough sideways landing in crosswinds at Sumburgh Airport.

Sumburgh

Post  atomenter on Thu 06 May 2010, 2:38 pm

Hi Mark
I worked offshore in the Brent Field for a good few years in the '70's and we used to fly Dan Air HS748's to Sumburgh then Sikorsky S61's to the Brent Field week on week off so we used Sumburgh every week. This was in the days before Chinook Helicopters made the trip direct from Aberdeen.
Spent some overnights in Shetland due to fog in Sumburgh (wandered around Jarlshof - fascinating place) but have no need to travel anywhere anymore (apart from Steam Related events!! - like Steam in the Park at Balado this weekend - will you be travelling south for that at all?)

Unfortunatly lack for funds means i wont be able to make it Tom Sad . If you need a steam excuse to travel to Shetland come to Shetland on the 5th and 6th of June, as we have a show called the Shetland Classic Motor Show which is held every two years and this years show we have managed to get 8 full size engines up from the bonaccord steam club plus one 4" tasker traction engine from the west cost. My Burrell will also be there and today the foden turned up in a big box Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy so that will also be there now.
I am a bit disapointed as i was wanting to steam the foden this weekend but i have to get the burrell finished as the inspector is coming a week on Tuesday and i havent even had it in steam yet affraid .

Thanks for the pic's Craig

Did you manage to find out about supplying the wood? if you could find out if you can and how much extra the wood will be?

Along with the drop down side kit there was suppose to be the fittings for the water lifter / water filler has there been any news on them?

OK, i'll ask dean/steve to look into some details on the wood.

im 99% sure the water lifter parts are all done, i definitely machined them a couple of months ago, unless there are other bits to do. Neutral

I dont have the water lifter parts yet? but maybe Steve is holding them back until the dropdown kit is done and sending it all of together.

I only remembered about the above yesterday when i was looking at the foden trying to work out the easiest way to fill the rear tanks up with water Question

Re: foden C type drop down sides kit

Post  tef 20 on Thu 20 May 2010, 12:55 pm

Hi Craig

The kit turned up today Cool

I have managed to find a company up here that stocks ash and i asked them for a quote for 6x2mtr lenghts of 38mmx16mm ash and 3.2mtrs of 100mmx10mm and 1mtr of 119mmx10mm of ash and the price came in today at 132 Shocked and that was all sanded and a glass finish i also thought i should be a gold finish for that price?

Not being a wood buyer does that sound like a lot of money for what it is or is ash just expensive to buy anyway and that quote was not to bad?

Hi Mark

Any hard wood is surprisingly expensive. Your quote doesn't seem too far off the mark. If you've seen the pics of the Model R's I'm building, the cost of the Ash used on the bodies was 2.5k.

The price of hardwood

Post  Steve Traill on Fri 21 May 2010, 4:43 am

As most hardwoods take four times as long as softwood to reach a loggable size the price reflects this. When I started in Carpentry 35 years ago Brazilian mahogany was only a bit dearer than pine as it was being cut from the rainforest and imported to Europe. For the last 20 odd years there has been an import ban on South American hardwoods to try & slow down the rate of deforestation. A lot of hardwoods now come from America where they have a fairly quick growing oak, Canada has a variety of trees & is so huge they can wait the 100 years to crop them and Malaysia where they have a lot of quick growing mahogay type trees. They look similar to Brazilian mahogany but are much lighter in weight and grow in about a third of the time. OK for indoor joinery but doesn't last 5 minutes outside.

There are virtually no English hardwoods available in commercial quantities, the only ones available are occasional trees that are cut if they are dangerous or in the way of development.
