DCC kit 7 !!

Post  miller on Sat 13 Mar 2010, 12:12 am

yes, the next showmans kit will be kit 7, the tender.

we have already started turning some parts for this and the laser cuts should be here on Wednesday. once these arrive we can get a better idea of time scales on getting this done.

we need to take extra care when forming the panels for this kit to ensure a good fit.

im not going to promise a date at this stage but we have been told "it needs to go out in march" Neutral

work is continuing on this kit...

all these bags contain billets for the turned parts...

work coming on steadily...

these will be the fillets (corners) for the tender sides...

they start off as rings...

then go on the 4th axis....

to be drilled and cuts are made to mark the edges of the segments. these will be cut up by hand and wielded into the side panels...

still waiting for the laser cut panels for this so can't really make much progress till they arrive

Find this all fascinating...

it means so much more than just receiving a box of perfectly formed and crafted metal lumps when you've some idea of what goes into making them...

thanks for the update

Post  Rickster on Mon 15 Mar 2010, 12:54 pm

Hi Steve/Dean/Isobelle/Craig and everyone else,

Just a quick note to thank you all for your hospitality today. Us two numpties turn up and take up Steve's valuable time and Deans half day!

We thoroughly appreciated the two hour factory tour and you really do have to see the operation to appreciate how much time and effort goes into these kits. The quality and systems put in place to ensure we get the quality we all expect is tremendous.

We can't thank you all enough for making us feel so welcome and answering our naive questions without complaint.

Thank you all anyway.

Best regards

Rick and Tony

still doing what we can on this until the laser cuts arrive.

these are/will be tow bar brackets...

A bit of good news. Steve has asked me to tell you that the design for the boiler is now complete and will be going off for approval tomorrow (Thursday). Once we have approval on this we "will" start work on them.

the last of the brake tube parts is now on the mill for drilling...

the laser cut plates arrived last thing Tuesday...

cant do anything with this lot until the sides are done...

the side plates were mounted on the mill for some final drilling. the brass blocks have been machined with the profile of the side plate...

this give a perfect location for the plates, stacked 5 high and bolted down...

then the edges need to be formed...

we have just started wielding in the fillet pieces and soon we can start forming the bottom and back plates.

more photos in time for the weekend,

more progress...

brake tube parts finished...

remember those corner/fillet parts? well this is where they fit...

and are wielded in place...

bottom plate on the CNC. this is a good example of why we could not laser cut all the holes. if anything after the bend point had been wrong, the whole lot would have been scrap. so we had to drill one part and form it to prove it out. good new is, it was perfect first time Cool

and then to bending/forming...

and as usual, to prove things out, our control tender is being built as we go along...

we can also make a start on some of the beading parts, although others have to wait until more forming has been done...

don't be fooled guys, there still lots to do Neutral and this part really has to be right Shocked

Are they able to deliver on Friday as its a bank Hol? Or would they be able to do a Saturday delivery? Otherwise it might be prudent to wait till Tuesday and make sure its A OK rather than rush it. If they can do Sat AM delivery I dont mind paying a bit extra for that service.

Hi Kevin

No Friday or Saturday deliveries, we checked today. I am however working all weekend including Friday and Monday, (on a personal project before you start feeling sorry for me). So, assuming we do get it finished and you fancy a trip to Dav, you could always pick it up. That applies to anyone of course. Just let us know Friday, so I can keep an eye out for you.

it's not really about rushing the job, it's more about working on the right numbers to get things done in time. no point spending all day doing 40 of one part is we only need to get 25 out the door, and then running out of time to do the other bits. Neutral

every part has been made a least once and proven on the control model, it all fits very well actually Cool

it's looking good this morning, im sure we can get it done in time but as always i never promise what i can't deliver.

OK, the kit has gone cheers

the main reason that we were claiming it was going to be a close thing was due to the bending and forming of the parts. we only have the one bending machine and most of the parts needed to go through this process. however, we needed to bend/form at least one of everything before we could do any milling/drilling. this meant that we either had to do one part and leave the bender sitting until the machining had caught up or keep breaking down and resetting the bender.

we got there in the end by only concentrating on enough parts to meet the dispatch figures, we still have to go back after Easter and finish the other bits Rolling Eyes

but it's done now.

as always, comments and questions welcome

happy Easter everyone

craig

PS: I've got some photos to process, may do them later or tomorrow
