4 Inch Burrell Governors and safety valves

Post  miller on Thu 07 Jan 2010, 10:36 am

back to work and back to the kits Rolling Eyes

part of the next 4 inch burrel kit is the governors. we covered the 2 inch version of these last year and the 4 inch is literally just a larger version, which makes it a lot easier to work on Wink

these drawings show the main parts that make up the governor...

balls !!!! Shocked yes that's right, balls, and lots of them. the 4 inch version has retaining wires on the balls so we need to make two different types, one central and one off-set...

the kit will include one central ball and two off-set ones so that all three retaining wires can fit around the main central shaft.

we mill these using this jig...

the ball halves sit in the recesses...

and this lid goes on top...

and we drill the holes and machine the slot for the springs "through the keyholes"...

loads more parts have been started. the main bodies were started at the same time as the 2 inch ones but we cant finish them till the bevel gears are done...

yep, these are the bevel gears...

drilled on the 4th axis machine, just like the small ones...

governor tops...

i'll post more stuff as we go along Cool

just about finished the work on the governors this week and most of the safety valve parts have been done as well Cool

the final ops on the main bodies have been done...

limit rings...

worm wheels...

and worms...

dummy glands...

and governor tops...

pulleys on the CNC Mill having the cross holes drilled...

oiler parts already packed...

and ball wires...

springs...

we have been building our own CNC control model as we go along, just to make sure all the moving parts mesh together. it's looking quite good so far...

safety valve bases are all done...

and the rest of the parts on on the machines now. the main SV lever is due in this week.

although most of the parts are now done, we can not guarantee a dispatch date until all the safety valves are assembled and set. it will go out by the end of the month.

marks also been working flat out on boilers this week Cool

What boilers are they? Not thinking far in advance and preparing DCC boilers?
