Transportation of 6' Steam Foden Lorry

Post  AlfieMoon on Sun 21 Oct 2018, 10:26 am

Dear All, I seek advice on the method you transport your 6' Foden steam lorries.

Being new to this side of the hobby, I have not started building yet and do not have the first stage chassis components.
Slight difficulty in getting these delivered by courier to Devon.
So I am thinking of buying a second hand trailer to pick these parts up and us for the final transportation of the completed lorry.

Do I need to be looking at a 12 or 14 foot long by 6' wide trailer SWL 2 ton and above?
Car transporter or commercial vehicle trailer with 4 wheels. winch and ramps.
Ifor Williams or other makes.

I have presumed that the enclosure on the trailer you build yourself or use tarpaulins and straps? Lock coupling to car and wheels locks?
Await your thoughts, thanks.

Hi

If money not a problem. A "Race car" covered car transport trailer. twin axle is an advantage for stability and balance but a lot harder to hand maneuver around.

Ifor Williams plant style trailer would also work well as also low decked. Quite easy to build a frame and get a Tarpaulin made to fit.

Transporting a LWB foden will be harder than a SWB as the centre of gravity is so much further forward on the LWB. You will need a intermediate bracing bar as a LWB would not be all the way to the headboard of the trailer to attain balance. So the trailer length will dictate that consideration etc.

With Crystal my Burrell Showman I have a LM105 10ft x 5.5ft twin axle trailer. The wheel sets are under the deck as I have space limitations where the trailer is stored and extracted through. This does make the trailer tall and the centre of gravity is somewhat higher, so requiring a more precise balancing of the cargo.

I would guess you need a 2t carry capacity as you will be carrying extra coal, engine wet so water, oiles etc. Also I am guessing camping gear as well. A Rigid enclosed trailer has an advantage due to security and also can become your living quarters while at events.

Hope these thoughts help you.

Thank you for your thoughts, I will bear these in mind on my search for a suitable trailer.
I will go back to Steam Traction World for a bit more data.

I would like to be in a position that money is no problem.
