July/August/September 2018 production photo

Post  craig@STW on Fri 06 Jul 2018, 3:57 pm

photos for this week...

the last stage of the Burrell / roller cylinder blocks is the fitting of the liners. here they are on the 4th axis mill...

on the subject of cylinder blocks, i have just started a new batch on 2inch blocks. made out of solid, the first op has around 12 tools and takes about 47 mins each...

lots more wood done this week. this is the traction wagon kit 3...

another job i've had to fit in around production. Burrell trigger levers...

boiler bushes...

and the very first, fully welded Roller Boiler...

and the second one. this one is still hot !!!

some very quick last minute photos this week...

the new batch of 2inch cylinder blocks that i started last week are now onto their second op. so that's the front and rear faces and saddle done. then its onto the top and sides and finally it needs a 4th axis op for the saddle holes...

the 2inch cylinder liners are also done...

we still have one machine cutting wood for the wagon kits. these will be the main cross members...

cutting out the clearance for the rear wheels...

the pile of finished parts is slowly growing...

also have a couple of machines working on the main chassis for the bowser. these should only take a couple of days and then they are off for fabrication...

and finally boiler making. yes i know it all looks very similar but this is actually a stage i don't think we have seen before. here you can see the internal firebox being held in place with rods and spacers, ready for welding. (it would probably be a good idea to sort all these boiler pics into a logical order at some point and post them in their own topic)

July,August, September production

Post  Heavyhaul on Sun 22 Jul 2018, 8:53 am

Hi Mark,
I'm like yourself building the showman's engine and still waiting for the last two kits. I've even started a second showman's, would be nice to finish the first one before starting the second. Since Craig posted the pictures about the trials with the alternators there's been no further updates regarding whether the alternators will fit the original dynamo castings or not. I agree with yourself it's nearly a year since receiving my last kit. One thing I can't understand is why did they leave it until the nearly the end of the production, before they started looking at changing the motors.

Regards
Steve

i just might also agree with you guys, but this is not the place for that particular question. i suggest a phone call may give you the answers ???

what can i tell you ?? well yes, the new parts are designed to fit the original castings. at the moment i believe we are looking at any modifications needed to those existing parts and then any adjustments and/or new parts will be made.

a few photos for this week.

brand new lyka boiler plates, around 250 holes per plate. holes are half inch. i have drilled two sets for a couple of "test boilers" to prove out the process...

all traction wagon wood is done and the new batch of water cart kits were finished toady...

the 2inch cylinder blocks are back on. working on the various steam ports...

and i have just started on some 2inch rear hubs...

4inch fire door runners...

on the lathe, 4inch Burrell con rods...

and boilers. this week they are being tubed...

this weeks photos...

the 2inch cylinder blocks are on their last op. this is the 4th axis op with the saddle holes and any other holes that are at a "strange" angle...

2inch rear hub halves are all done. we just need to turn the tubes that hold them together...

the BU4 con-rods are still on. these take around an hour each to turn !!!

and im making the bearing straps and will be starting on the bearings next week...

showmans draw bolts...

boilers still being tubed...

and Harry installing another fire box...

just to confirm that Ian is currently working on the new showmans generator kits, working out how to make the new parts work with the old kit. progress is slow but it is happening...slowly !!!

this weeks photos...

the next batch of boilers are onto the final machining stage...

the 4inch burrell/road loco and 2inch cylinder blocks have now had their liners fitted...

and the 2inch pistons are on the lathes...

and 2inch steam chest covers...

2inch piston glands...

4inch burrell con-rod bearings are now on the 4th axis machine...

this allows me to cut all the important slots in one operation...

and from the fabrication area, some 4inch gear guards...

Whats happened to the weekly production update? It's now been two weeks with no news - most unusual. I hope all is well at STW.

Craig, on 13th July, you posted pictures of wagon wood being machined, can you please update where this now stands, as we haven't had a kit.

Thanks,

Mark.

Post  craig@STW on Fri 28 Sep 2018, 4:05 pm

this weeks photos !!! yes i have managed to find some time this week.

the main point of interest this week is the progress on the Lyka boilers. the final hole sizes have been decided and the plates are now on the mill for drilling...

the number of holes per plate means progress is slow, but im slowly getting through them...

and work continues on the 1st off test boiler, with the tubes now being fitted...

other jobs on the machines this week include road loco boiler barrels...

BU4 weigh-shaft brakets...

and lifting arms for both BU4 and showmans/road loco...

the manual section have been working on the roller cladding...

and 4inch safety valves...

BU4 con rods ready to go...

the final Lyka engine kit is all done and ready to go next week...

also going next week is Foden 6inch kit 23...
