Case Hardening

Post  steamlaser on Tue 10 Jan 2017, 10:54 pm

I am considering case hardening the slide bars and various bits of motion works. Has anybody tried doing this yet? It will be easy to heat the small components and dump them in "Kasenite".
With the cold weather I cannot do any painting so I do to move forward doing other tasks.

Before you case harden parts you must consider what grade the steel is and what it will be bearing upon. There's no point in case hardening slide rails for example if you then get more wear in the cross head. Far better to leave as is and replace the slide rails. Personally I wouldn't go down this road.
