Post  craig@STW on Sun 11 Jan 2015, 4:06 am

hello all. here are the first production photos of this year.

another batch of showman's front wheels have been drilled...

been working on the burrell 4inch crank shafts...

the 2inch burrell front axles were finished...

and now concentrating on the 2inch cylinder blocks...

after the blocking out op 3 was the port at the bottom...

then on to the front. this area has to be carved out for clearance on the mounting bolts...

and then the port on the top...

just the back port and saddle holes to do and the the liners can be shrunk in...

also working on 6inch foden globe valves...

drilling the important angled hole...

Do we know what the next kit will be the first 6inch foden batch? At the point we need some more bits to bolt on. The machining is looking very nice.

I can say having been in the factory last week that it is a hive of activity with more people working there than I have ever seen before. Also the steam cars are absolutely magnificent in the flesh, it would be a sin to subject them to the Dorset mud/dust.

Hi Craig,

You gotta make sure you get lots of pictures of Steve's Stanley Steam cars coming to life! That'll be quite a day for celebration!

Perhaps you should give them their own thread on the forum, it would be of enormous interest to everyone. It's a fantastic project Steve has undertaken (His projecst always are!!) & I'm sure there are a few builders out there who don't fully understand what Steve & STW are capable of, when it comes to producing incredible steam machines!! I know it's a lot of work to make it happen, but this is a "trumpet well worth blowing"!!.....Think of the advertising value!!
It's all part of the amazing story of STW!!

Regards,
Tony

I agree with Tony. Címon Steve, let us all into world of the steam car. I have seen them close up a number of times and although you are not making them available to the general public as kits, I know that a separate forum covering the build would be of great interest. Very Happy Time to undertake this is an obvious consideration as I know all you guys at STW work flat out for your living. Rolling Eyes pale

There were some more photos posted somewhere on here during last year showing them painted too but I cant find them. I saw them in September and they are absolutely stunning.

yeah, may be a bit late to "start" a section for the steam cars as they are nearly done, but i can update the thread posted above with any photos i can find. and yes, i have a few photos this week but i think its going to be worth waiting for some real "footage" over the next few weeks.

anyway, this weeks pics...

2inch cylinder blocks are finished on the machines and now just need manual tapping and the liners fitting...

this week has been mostly about 2inch front hubs...

and the inner

and outer covers...

and we are just starting on the showman's front wheel hubs...

Well I'm sorry but I can't get excited about the steam cars despite the amount of work that has gone into them, simply because as a 4" DCC Road Loco builder there were FIVE months last year when no kits were delivered, we're now half way through January and that is looking doubtful too, and the cylinder blocks are facing a delay of at least SIX months.
There are only a limited number of times you can play the "supplier lets us down" card.
As customer I have certain expectations, I'll gladly join the STW fan club once you get production back on track.

That's a tough one, but it is better to have the kits delivered complete & up to standard & in some kind of order, or you end up with stuff all over the place. Bits can then go missing. Also STW can't test production bits on the test model they build with every run. All I'd say is be patient, it will be worth the wait when it is finished! Also STW have a habbit of catching up with more kits later, which may not suit everybody, but usually means the final finish date isn't too delayed!!

Tony

Re: January/February/March 2015 production photos

Post  Steam Traction World on Mon 19 Jan 2015, 3:46 am

Hi Capricorn (sorry you didn't put your name),

A letter has been printed and will be leaving for the DCC customers tomorrow giving you guys an update.

All i can do is apologise about the delays. As much as you don't like to hear it we are actually victims of our own success. Many of the parts for your engine are in stock (in fact i could probably supply you with 75% of your engine from stock) however we lost count of how many engines we'd actually sold so on some on the long lead time items we've come up short. We don't believe in sending kits with items missing hence the delays and it's too confusing giving some one a kit 10 and someone else a kit 11 for example so we leave everyone in the same boat.

Believe me we are doing everything we can to pull it back with the first batch of boilers well under way (hoping to have some sent out in February) and a kit should certainly be going out this month.

Just so you are aware. All the work Steve does on the cars is done during his own time (normally up until midnight each day and all weekend) so has no detrimental affect on production or the ability to order and get the kits out on time.

If you would like to call to discuss things further with me then please do not hesitate to give me a ring.

Regards

Dean

All I can say is keep up the good work guys. We know delays are inevitable but I for one am pleased that a British engineering company is being successful.

I have to say from my own experience when speaking to Steve or Dean they have always been upfront and explained the situation and not made excuses.
