Just starting out

Post  Mattatkco on Fri 26 Dec 2014, 4:40 pm

Very new to steam model building! Received my first kit just before Christmas, which was a back wheel. The counter sunk screw which fit the spokes to the hub seem to long. Do I cut down the screws, or tap out the holes a bit more?

Welcome Matt!
Probably simpler to shorten the screws.  Put a nut on them before cutting off the end so that the nut can re-establish the thread when you remove it.

Welcome Matt,

enjoy! Tim's advice is sound - A metric tap and die set is a useful addition to the tool box as well.

With best wishes

wheel assembly

Post  Mike King on Sat 27 Dec 2014, 2:17 am

Hi Matt,
I had the same issue, i opted to tap the threads deeper. I had the second rear wheel, which had the
same issue. I also had problems with the brass hub cap screws. One snapped!! So i replaced with bolts. I guess that these are minor problems, which can be overcome. This is my first build, so i imagine that this forum will get plenty of use from me.
Theres a huge amount of expertise out there.

Thank you for the info. Managed to sort that little problem out, the next one is: the Last two spokes are reluctant to fit. The rivet holes are at least 3/4 of a hole out. I've loosen every thing off, but still they don't want to fit. I'm I doing something wrong, or do I just re drill the holes?

Thanks Matt

I had a similar problem , when I started one of my wheels , but loosen everything off then loose fitted all the rivets and worked towards the hub, tightening and it seemed to go together a lot better.
