Colour scheme for DCC road loco

Post  Edward on Sat 06 Dec 2014, 5:17 am

Hello everyone,
Just to introduce myself. I live near Skipton in North Yorkshire and I am signed up for a Burrell DCC road loco build. The first kit is due to arrive in late January.
I was wondering about various authentic colour schemes and would value any information members can offer. I think either black or Crimson Lake are probably the most popular choice . I quite like green but not too keen on chocolate wheels!
What about Crimson Lake with yellow wheels? would it be authentic for a Road Loco rather than a Showman's engine?
Any advice would be welcome.
Regards,
Edward.

I've done my crane engine with crimson lake & yellow wheels like 'Old Tim'. My advice when choosing a colour scheme is to find a full size engine colour scheme you like, take lots of photos & copy it. Also scale the lining so it's not too thick.

Have a look at www.steamscenes.org.uk plenty of colour photo's of road loco's for ideas.

Green and chocolate wheels for me - don't think I'll be doing much lining out though.

Edward, you can paint the engine any colour you like!  Showman's engines often had yellow wheels but they are a bit more rare on road locos: 'Old Tim' being a very noteworthy exception.   Another livery combination that looks good on a RL is crimson lake bodywork with red wheels lined out in black and bone white.

Enjoy the build.

Have you looked at Showman Shane's picture thread?... Now that's a feast of colour, you need to put sun glasses on just to look at it Very Happy Very Happy

I'd agree that it's your engine & you colour it in any colour you like, if it's "a bit different", then it's bit "unique"!! Very Happy Very Happy

Tony

Personally I think Black is fine, and it will end up that colour anyway if you use it properly, and you can!!! But then I am biased.

Colour scheme for road loco

Thanks everyone for their advice. I think green with red black and yellow lining (similar to "The Dalesman")
is how it's going to be. Possibly chocolate wheels but still thinking about that.
Will post pictures throughout the build providing I can cope with the downloading!!
Regards,
Edward. Very Happy

Here you go then Edward, some inspiration. The Dalesman was next to us at the lunch stop of the NTET road run so we have a couple of pictures of it, mostly with Blackbeard in the shot for comparison apart from the arty shot.

Superb pictures of The Dalesman and Blackbeard. When you can see the detail, the wheels look really good in chocolate with ? orange/yellow lining.
Now I am convinced, green with chocolate wheels! Thanks very much for helping me to make my mind up. Very Happy

Edward.

Is "Green with Chocolate Wheels" a Yorkshire thing? That's going to be the livery of my Road Loco "Volunteer" when it moves from undercoat; again influenced by Dalesman when she was in a darker bronze green livery.

Edward, you are not a million miles away from Dalesman's former home at Long Preston in early preservation days!

Good luck with the build,

Tim

I'm going for chocolate wheels - foil wrapped of course, as Burrell road loco' Clinker No.3257 who used to live in Nottinghamshire but has since emigrated to Cornwall I believe, looks rather nice in that livery.
Although I think she may have show lining and I won't be going down that route as much as I may want to.

Edward

I am Phil Procter, son of the late Gerry Procter.
We owned the full size Dalesman for a few years, and my dad also started to build two 3" models of it before he became too ill to finish them.
They are currently being worked on by new owners and should eventually appear on the scene.

He went to T & R Williamsons paint factory in Ripon, and they colour matched the engine paint for use on the models.
If you enquire at the factory they called it "Burrell Green" & "Burrell Brown", I would think they still have records of the mix if you wanted to buy some.

Williamsons supplied Fowlers in Leeds with paint, so they are well established.

Regards
Phil
