Chassis colour ?

Post  phil gomez on Mon 03 Nov 2014, 11:16 am

Hi, anybody know what would be the best colour for the wagon chassis?
I'm thinking red, but as you know there are about a million colours of red (red seems common colour from that I have seen so far).
So the question is which one?
Is there a traditional colour for the chassis?
Or maybe a different one???????  Shocked
Can anyone help.

Hello Phil
Signal Red is the colour that most fodens chassis were painted in.

I have gone with black for the chassis, after a lot of looking at rallies, mainly because of my paint scheme but also it looks better than the red, especially bright red, when it gets dirty. If you are happy with all that cleaning go for it.

I went for Manchester Red with bits like the springs rear axle and swivels Black, Manchester Red to be a bit different , and the Black for the oily and greasy bits so it wont show up so much

Me again.
How much paint do you (the Foden builders) recommend I should buy?
I know the first thing to do after the metal is prepared is the primer then the under coat, how much would I need? Plus how many under coats would you lot recommend.
Craftmaster I think would be my best chose plus heritage steam supplies is only down the road in Portsmouth and they are agents for them.

Hi phil

I didn't prime mine i went straight for one coat of Undercoat and it stuck extremely well, i couldn't even scratch it off with a knife blade, then i have applied 2/3 coats of top coat with gentle flat downs in between, sometimes if really lucky i can get a good thickness of top coat on one coat does, but it take a lot longer to dry.

I did try using etch on all my work but it didnt go well it never dried well then the undercoat and top coat just peeled off

Hi Russ.
Did you colour match your under coat with your top coat?
Craftmaster recommend colour match under coats (under coat depending on top coat colour) interested in what you did.

Thanks again Russ.
Cheeky question, any new picture of your wagon?
Different subject, STW mentioned they might make a trailer for the Foden wagon - that would be interesting.

No worries Mate

No there hasn't been much change on the engine recently all my time been on making the new spacers and brass centers for the rear wheels, but hopefully this weekend i should have them done and get it on all 6 wheels

Yes that would be really interesting, im thinking of making a Living Van for mine after seeing one on ebay for sale a few week ago , that way if i want i can road to local rallys and stop in the van

One thing about the top surface of the main frame rails is that they take a bashing as you fit the rest of the parts, especially getting the steering box in. I left the final top coats until everything was done.

As far as I know I am the only one building an accurate Foden articulated trailer, but I think there are a couple of low-loaders being built.  As to what you could put on the back of the estate tractor you have a lot more choice.  Steve and I discussed a pair of log bunks, with fibre glass log, a while ago.  I have seen a couple of pairs at rallies and they look good, not the ideal passenger carriage though.  It depends on what you want to do with it?

Hi Mikero.
Thanks for your reply.
You are absolutely right, from what I've read that would be the most sensible thing to do.
I am bound to drop a spanner or hammer or something heavy if you know what I mean. Ha. Very Happy
Roll on the end of November and the first kit.
