Oil reacting with paintwork

Post  MrStationHouse on Thu 30 Oct 2014, 3:04 pm

Has anyone had any problems with Craftmaster reacting with oil? Although I have only run on air, the paint has wrinkled up on contact with the oil. Has anyone else had this problem?

Best wishes
Simon

Hi Simon,
I haven't steamed my Showmans yet, much to everyones annoyance Very Happy , But it has been run on air & I have to admit that "even I" allowed the boiler cleading to get covered in oil Shocked However, I can happy report that it had no effect on the Craftmaster paint work, even though it had laid on there for quite a while! (with all sorts of unmentionable dust in it!!)

The paint was well hardened off, but not baked as if the engine had had a fire in her! So I reckon you're problem is something else, unless you used a particularly aggressive oil or the paintwork hadn't fully cured/hardened off. Whatever, I totally sympathise with your predicament!!

Regards,
Tony

Thanks Tony,

it is a bit of a mystery , the paint was at least a year old, I've used Hallett steam oils which should be ok. I am experimenting on some out of the way pieces to see if I can replicate it and understand the cause.

With best wishes
Simon

I had this where oil seemed to get under the paint at a machined edge. It was in a spot you can really see so hasn't bothered me.

Maybe it's just down to not getting a good key to the steel underneath?
