Managed to get her turned round.

"Fill her up" with Scottish premium water.

She hold water.

Unfortunately I need to go away for a few days so the steam up will have to T.B.A.

Hi Lynn most impressive on the result, I think you have a sub STW workshop up there in Scotland, the pressure is on with a video as it will show all your hard work come to life, Great to see your posts with info, good luck on the firing.
@Road loco, there are not many builders out there that would give such a detailed progress report, you must be most impressed with the outcome.

Thanks for the complements.

You would be surprised how little space I am working in. Ask Tony!

There might be an addition to tomorrow's event. I might have a live stream setup on YouTube.

An excellent video Lynn, better than the stuff on tv, there were only a few small leaks which is to be expected, was the by-pass valve passing steam, it seem as if it was, i noticed that you were trying to get it seal a number of times.

Fab video that I'm working through in 30min chunks which is amusing the wife.

It does go to show for newbies how relaxed the whole affair is, wish there was something like this on my first steaming.

Re: Mikes Road loco

Post  lynnr on Thu 03 Mar 2016, 11:49 am

Hi Everyone

I hope to get out to Crystal's bedroom tomorrow to continue working on the road loco. IF my knee behaves overnight.

The plan, if the weather also co operates, is to remove the valve covers. Steam the engine to get nice and hot all over and set mid and end points on the reverser quadrant. Also test the tightness of the regulator and starting valve. Put the HP cover back on and run single for testing. Then put LP on and test further. Having LP off will also confirm if the block is good or not.

Oh also need to take the backs of the LP eccentric straps and move the eccentrics over 1mm to the flywheel. Just catching the edge of the water pump eccentric. Think the crank found its home position when running the other day.

Only other thing is to remove the piston from the water pump and polish out the squeak that could be heard on the video. I think the machining left a spiral grove in the piston and its rubbing on the packing.

Otherwise with cogitation over the first light and test steam she will not take long to reach inspection ready status.
