Good idea for a new engine, you decide!

Post  Steve Traill on Sun 18 May 2014, 12:05 pm

Saw this in Vintage Spirit and thought what a nice engine it would make in 4"

Front half is traction engine, the back half a lorry & it's a Burrell!, I did see one done in 3" some years ago, looked & went well. The reason some people don't want a Foden lorry is you can't see the motion work, no problem here. It's got great wheels, everything is easy to get at. Steering would be good, I'm not sure about the box body, just a flat bed with sides would be fine. I suspect a fair bit of stuff could be cross pollinated from the existing STW Burrells.

What do you think?

PS: This has not been discussed with anyone at STW so don't start ringing up for start dates!

I can see what you mean, the Foden back axle unit would fit as well.

Good idea for a new engine

Move the axle back with a chain drive from each side of the 2nd shaft, which retains differential and appears to be what they did and with frame members extended. All a simple way towards the new model.

Sadly I only have an agricultural not a road loco which would make it a real goer.

Peter.

good idea for a new engine

I understand that the Burrell wagon was derived at the front end using parts mainly from the Gold Medal Tractor, there is at least 1 model, possibly 2 in 4'' scale. One can be seen on Traction Talk events photo's from the rally in Dordrecht although this maybe in 3'' scale. I have been lead to believe that at least 2 people are currently building them in 6'' scale, and yes it would be a very nice wagon to do in kit form, probably better in 6'' scale as they are quite small wagons in 4'' scale. Brian S.
