Trailer advice needed

Post  G4df on Tue 21 Jan 2014, 11:07 am

Assuming you've built a 4inch SCC Burrell successfully and you want to take it to a rally, the best/only way if you don't have a van is to tow it with a trailer. Does anyone have any experience of having a suitable trailer built? The tow car would be a VW Passat or similar, ie 750 kg capacity.
I'd welcome your views.

i think you may not have enough capacity to tow. You only have approx 230Kg over the estimated dry weight of the engine. A trailer of just adequate strength would be over 150Kg leaving about 80Kg for water in the boiler, tender, can of oil, tools, coal, food, drink etc before you hit your max train weight.

I towed my 4" agricultural in an Ifor Williams BV84 single axle which will have a max loaded weight of 1400Kg which should take the engine without water and dont overload the coal etc. This was towed behind a Vauxhall Vectra for 4 years with no issues, as are most of the 4" scale engines I have seen. I would have thought the Passat would be OK with that behind it unless you know the rules governing trailer weights and you are restricted by them. At that point you need to decide if you want to stick to the rules or have your hobby??? or lay out for a new vehicle??

I am wondering if you have picked the unbraked trailer weight as that's very low. I would have thought the Passat would be around 1.4t braked trailer. †There are plenty of trailers available on the second hand market suitable if you keep an eye out and are not in a rush for it.

Also check the driving licence for your max weights, they vary depending on when you passed your test, I forget the dates and limits but they can be found on line quite easily.

Just checked on the web and a Passat will easily tow 1400kgs. The Ifor Williams BV84 (rated at 1400 Kgs) would cope nicely with the SCC and has the advantage of the box van security. You must have a braked trailer and of course your licence should include the correct categories for towing, otherwise you will have to take a trailer test.

Driving licence, if you passed your car test after 1 Jan 1997 then you will only be able to drive up to 3.5 tonnes all up mass. So that is the max permissible weight of the car plus any trailer. Basically it means the car plus trailer for the SCc would put you over that weight. Hence no licence, you can take a trailer licence test was about £150 for the test. If you got your car licence before the above date you will be within your licenced groups.

Broadly speaking that's correct. Slightly more to it than that unfortunately and it also changed again in Jan 13, but I'm sure this won't affect us. My daughter however, who just passed her test, †will need trailer test before she can tow ours.

If unsure best to have a read of these -

https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/car-towing-weight-and-width-limits

https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/towing-equipment

By the way I thought as long as you were the owner of the vehicle who's reg number was on the trailer, and the vehicle towing it, the reg didn't need to match between tow vehicle and trailer. †Not what this says.

Edit....
Ah I see this applies only to agricultural vehicles.
