4.5 burrell problems

Post  andysleigh on Tue 31 Dec 2013, 9:51 am

Hi folks

I know its not STW.
but been involved with getting a 4.5" burrell running, whos builder died before it was complete.
When running it wheezes and huffs along, and seems rather gutless.
certainly not nice and smooth running like most others i see

anybody know what could be wrong?
piston rings?
valve seat?
valve timing? (is a bit out at the moment)

Hi Andy

How are all the valve gear pins and the expansion links? Nice fit or lots of play. Next I would look at pulling the valve chest cover and have a look at the valve and the valve face. I would also check the timing. If all good there I would pull the front cover off the cylinder and have a look at the bore. After that I would think about pulling the piston.

All the best

finally got round to looking at the engine.
Valve face looks fine, forgot to check the timing.
but theres quite alot of play in the expansion link. and surrounding linkage. that cant be helping
the valve movement didnt seem to be very much either.
and the die block didnt seem to come near the top and bottom of the expansion link, so need to check on that with another engine
