How did you find the gold leaf. I've just bought some myself.
The last time I done guilding was at school. I've actually got an 'o' level
in signwriting. Wish my hand was as steady now as it was way back then.
Still got the theory, just got to put it back into practice.
The wagons are looking great. 10 out of 10 for the writing.

Hi Jim

Basically great fun and fairly easy. I used stencils when applying the size and leaf.

Right. Now on to the second wagon.

Upside down is the best I think. Nice height to work at and easier to paint I think.

and getting all the undercarriage off ready for cleaning and repainting.
I am amazed there is so much mud up under the chassis of this wagon. It is normally the first behind the engine so I guess when Crystal kicks up water and mud this wagon gets it.

Off now to deep clean the underside and get ready for painting.

Now for the red. First coat on. I will do the edge of the chassis when the wagon is upright and the side boards are off.

When parts that donít normally get seen look as good as the parts that do get seen, well thatís a sign of a real showman.
Looking real good Lynn.
Cant wait to see how you handle the pinstripes over all those cross members and things.

Hi

This is brushed oil based coach enamel. Professional paint and I have to buy it by the 5 gal pot as this is the smallest quantity available.

Things are setting up nicely but the red is not hard enough yet to mask off to paint the black ironwork. So been doing the black that is off the wagon and the tow strap.

Is it springtime?

Nope.

But it is in the workshop though. Corrosion removed and repainting ready for refitting.

Let this side dry and turn over and do the other side tomorrow.

Interesting that you are painting the springs and not just cleaning them up and greasing them up ?

I imagine painting a single leaf but when you have multiple leafs is there not an issue of the paint just getting rubbed off or causing the springs to "stick" or not be as "Springy" due to the paint binding them ?

Hi

I am in the dry camp. A light coat of paint. They do not "stick" together at all and after 7 years when I took the springs apart there was still paint between the leaves. Also the inter leaf movement is very small indeed on these springs and the only rub point in evidence was where the chassis cleat rested on the open end.

More progress

Front axle and wheel set refitted. Ironwork for the dragbar fitted. More paint applied. Now time to let it all dry before turning the "Mara" the wagon back on to his wheels. "Uisge" wagon will be pleased to not have to carry Mara anymore.

Must be making progress.

Wagon back up the correct way and stacked for storage and further fettling.

Uisge wagon is actually attached to the front tow pin of Crystal at the moment to keep everything in place. Normally the wagons are stacked the other way up so the longer tow bar is bottom to make moving the stack around easier.

So if you can fit one wagon in you can fit two in the same space. I think three wagons stacked would be pushing the limit just a touch!

The bolts have arrived so on to the next phase.

Installation of the breakaway chain system. (Still to repaint the end of the chassis)

Now just waiting for the stainless steel chain arriving from Germany.

I have always been cautious when on the public road and normally had a 8mm wire rope threaded through the train "just in case" something came apart.
So now it will be more prototypical in look and function. Hopefully never to be needed.
