Making my mind up

Post  hudmut on Tue 15 Jan 2013, 12:43 pm

I need help in making my mind up. Over the last 2 years iv been building my engine iv ask this one question many times but not once has any one answered it its all ways gone of in a different direction and this question is what is the size of the lining on your engine what dimension have you used or some thing along them lines. I'm not looking for hard and fast dimensions i just want a its 3/8 black line with a 1/6 red one each side with the centre of the black line 11/16 from the edge sort of thing because I'm a engineer iv worked to a dimension all my life its hard to just wing it or at most have a good starting point to help steer the hole job.

I have made a few test runs on bits of scrap and i like the scale of the 3/8 black line but i just cant make my mind up with what size red line to put with it i think a 1/6, 0.057 or a 3/64, 0.043 line looks good but i just cant commit is any one else willing to do it for me ?

Here is a pic of my tests please help

Top line looks best to me.

3rd line down also looks balanced well. 2 & 4 are out of "balance"

I also went with what I like and not prototype. I used "the striper" paint pinstriping stencil tape from finess pinstriping. Purchased via pinstrippinguk. F2 on the cleading. Tender and belly tank are mixed tape and free sizing using the 1/8 blue stripping tape from the same supplier. F11 & F23 in various locations on the engine and bowser. Very good choice of widths and by being machine produced give very accurate spacing and so easy to put on. Check my build thread for videos of me using the tape.

Spokes were done combo of wide tape and beugler running the red down each side to get balance and centre.

For what it's worth, the top lines are probably the "truer to scale"....... BUT, I personally like the next set down.... them's the ones I'd go for!!
Wonderful job with the Beugler head by the way!!

Tony

The top lines get my vote, pale colours shout at you so subtlety is the name of the game.

Top one for me too for what it's worth as my engine has no lining Very Happy Steve is right, subtlety is what is required.

Top ones get my vote but like Brian I have not gone down the route of pinstripes with the exception of a single line.

Top.

No offence meant to anyone, just my personal opinion, but the others look like they were done by a five year old, or one on a cheapo plastic toy kit.
