How to seal steam pipes

Post  IanL on Mon 03 Dec 2012, 9:01 am

Hi All,

I am at the stage of fitting the first steam pipes which for me are the two on top of the boiler to the steam head and water gauge, they appear to be just brass against brass there is no mention of putting anything in the joint in the instructions but I would feel more confident if there was at least some sort of compressin washer between the pipe end brass fitting and the brass elbow.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

The copper pipe end is quite mailable and will go steam tight very easily without very much force.

Hi Ian,

Just PTFE tape for me - hasn't leaked a drop or a whiff of steam since it was put on and I've now steamed a good many hours.

hope this maybe of some help

For me there was an issue with a few leaks and on speaking to Steve he said you should use a jointing compound to be on the safe side. I used a liquid PTFE from the local plumbers merchant called "gimme the white stuff" sealed up any leaks I have had. The guys at my local MES said that the tape can allow steam through the strands so the liquid is more effective.

Thanks Lynn and Rick,

I have wound some PTFE tape over the end slightly and did wonder if this would help seal the joint. No not over the central hole! I saw an advert for PTFE sealing washers somewhere today but they looked too big made me think a bit about the steam leaking.

Thanks for your advice
