White Nylon gearwheel

Post  Kevster on Fri 23 Nov 2012, 9:19 am

Hi all,

I have been thinking about dying the white gear wheel black so its not so obvious.

Can it be done? or will the process make the nylon brittle and render it useless?

Thanks

Kev

My first thought is paint for plastic car bumpers it is designed to stick to plastic not sure about nylon there is also a primer that comes in a spray can for plastic (Tetrosyl plastic primer not sure where I got it from about four years ago) have looked in Frost catalogue but not there, then follow that with conventional paint. None of these would of course work on the gear teeth.

Thanks Ian,

Yes the gear teeth will of course show with wear but i could live with that.

Just seen a product called dylon ,its used for dying nylon fabrics, I wonder if it would work on the nylon gear?

I dont want to try anything that might alter the nylon in a bad way, I need a brainiac scientist!

I painted mine with normal craft master paints - I.e. one coat of primer, one undercoat and two top coats. I only painted the outside not the inner or between the teeth. After many hours of steaming the paint has been fine and the gear teeth in between are a dirty grey colour from the oil. It doesn't show and the paint is fine.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

This scientist tried dying the plastic gear tooth: it didn't work, but normal Delrin or nylon can be dyed.
Paint it is then.
