Scale number plates

Post  andyfletch on Sun 01 Feb 2009, 2:22 pm

I have just registered my Burrell for the road.

I have seen some engines with scale sized number paltes. I am looking for white on black pressed aluminium ones.

Can anyone help with where i can get some?

How did the registration go? I have sent and recieved all the forms but there is a wealth of irelevant questions relating to SVA, emissions, etc on the new build form. Which form did you use? I would also like to get some scaled plates if anyone knows.

Regards Kevyn.

registration of the burrell

Post  tompettitt on Mon 02 Feb 2009, 12:24 pm

sorry dont know of any scale plates.
how about acid etching as a different method to pressing them?
scale number plates would be ilegal on the Queens highway but it seems to be tollerated in the southeast.
i think several of us could be interested in the registration process.

Number plates

Post  Atlas on Mon 02 Feb 2009, 1:43 pm

Having just replaced my old chimney with the new fatter one (and doesn't it look better!) I have had to rebuild my front number plate as the brackets on the old one didn't fit the new hole places. I used the same rectangular flat piece of plate ( I originally found a suitable bit of copper but anything is OK) with two right angled metal bars brazed to the back. I then sprayed it satin black. Next I used Avery white stick on letters and numbers about 1" high and then sprayed clear laquer over the top. The lettering was harder to find this time round.
If I ever get stopped and asked why my number plate is smaller, my answer will be that motor bikes don't have forward facing plates and that in any case this is a 1/3rd scale engine and therefore 1/3rd scale plates are correct!

Registration of steam vehicles

Post  TB on Wed 04 Feb 2009, 12:33 am

To register a steam vehicle, go to your county DVLA office in person and explain exactly what you want. They usually have a person who deals with specialist vehicles, eg steam, and are usually very helpful and sometimes very interested in the project. They will require (in my experience) invoices for all parts purchased, so I photocopied all the lists of parts supplied with each kit and the relevant invoices from MW. They will also want to inspect the vehicle and in these days of cost cutting you will probably have to take the vehicle to them. They will have to sight the boiler number stamped on it (its the vehicle identity number for steam vehicles like a chassis number) so make sure it is visible---usually on boiler front tube plate. They will give you all the relevant forms to fill in and eventually issue you with a registration document and FREE tax disc.

Please could you give us a bit more detail about the trimming you had to do?

Thanks,

scale number plates

Post  andyfletch on Fri 06 Feb 2009, 2:13 pm

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been working away this week

I followed Julia's solution in Burrell builder blog at http://www.kitbuilder.co.uk/burrell/steaming4.htm

Go online to DVLA http://www.dvla.gov.uk/forms.aspx. you can't download the V55/4 that you will need as its carbonated. I completed the form and took it to my local office with proof of purchase, boiler paperwork with boiler number on it, certificate of insurance, proof of ID and Retention document for the number I wanted to put on the engine.

I had to make an appointment to take the engine to the office, they will give you a date and time, and all they want to see is the boiler number. they will then stamp your paperwork and issue the log book all for 55. you get a free tax disc as well

hope this helps

How did you get the retention on a number plate, was that something you had done some time ago? And is it an appropriate number for the engine or personalised for you? I was thinking along the lines of BU09 REL.

Personalised plates

Post  andyfletch on Fri 20 Feb 2009, 2:47 pm

Kevin
I had a reg number on a retention certifcate, which was personal to me. I confirmed what I wanted to do at DVLA and paid the 25 for transfer. Thet have subsequently written to me to tell me that I can't have a cherished number on this type of vehicle. They class the Burrell as an off road vehicle, similar to a tractor and Swansea will not allow it. I have had my 25 refunded and a standard 58 plate number issued - gutted

number plates

Post  Steve Traill on Wed 25 Feb 2009, 4:18 am

I fell into the same trap and bought a nice short numberplate to put on my engine only to find the DVLA wouldn't allow me to use it. They advised that the transfer of numberplates can only take place between vehicles that require a MOT test so that excludes any steam vehicle. The number plate now sits on my work truck! bounce
