A word of caution: everyone knows now about the need for a return

spring to let this brake fully off, but is everyone aware this is

because of its very strong self-servo make-up ?

This self-servo action will make it a wonderful brake when facing

forward downhill, but totally untrustworthy vice-versa. I have parked

mine on a gentle slope the 'wrong way round', and been surprised how

easy it is to push it backwards with the brake well on.

Now that our journey on the Likamobile has been completed, we are considering either releasing a new batch in January or trying something slightly different. We have the opportunity to produce a car based on a Stanley Model R from 1909. We are fortunate to have been offered some assistance from a gentleman who has already made one. This means it would make life a whole lot easier for us and hopefully ensure we get our attention to detail accurate.

My water pump started leaking so I decided to take it apart inspect things.

What I found was not pretty!

The metal check valves had pounded out the backside of the seat to the point

where it was a check valve in both directions! This was likely causing very

high forces on the water pump pistons, which is probably why my cross heads are

so worn.

The fix is to machine the pumps to accept 3/8" nylon balls. I cut the seats at

45° and milled clearance slots on the backside so ...

Hi all Lika owners and Steve,

Not having had any instructions with my kits 16 -18A I presume I missed out on the instructions on valve timing. I set mine up as per Rick (USA) from his website. The engine is running well but I am not convinced I have the best valve settings.

If Steve or any Lika owner can give me the best settings please post a reply.

What a brilliant idea the John O Groats to Lands End run in a Lika is. Well done and best wishes,

Have now installed a Riello G10 burner which fitted the boiler mountings with no trouble at all, (it was designed for this burner). I obtained it from our local central heating merchant, who had one in stock and it comes tested and calibrated to give approx 70 Kw of heat with a 2.0 gal/hour nozzle and fuel pressure and air balance already adjusted. I run it on 28 second central heating oil at 70p/litre (quite legal) and had an exta load delivered into a 45 gall oil drum next to where I keep the ...

I agree with WWyman. The burner supplied can be made to work, but some mods are needed.

I run mine on paraffin, using a Danfoss 1.75 gal/hour nozzle with a fuel pressure of 160psi.

a/. It burns much cleaner. I found that diesel fumes were forming a sooty deposit on the boiler tubes, reducing efficiency and sooting up the light sensor.

b/. It has a higher calorific value so less is used, (marginally).

c/. It is cheaper than diesel, (95p/gall), and the DVLA had no objection to it being ...

Having read of Skippy's mishaps, he and perhaps others of you might be interested to know of my solution. In the main casting of the burner body is a square hole running for and aft right through the casting, bottom right if viewed from the back. I assumed this was for 'taking the weight' as the boiler fitter slid the burner into position along a half-inch square rod fitted to the boiler ? Anyway, I decided to fit such a rod to my Lika to help deal with the loadings the bumps and pot-holes of ...

Hellos all, got my car on the road today and passed through the DVLA

test in Birmingham today. They used my boiler number as the frame number

and they took all of 5 minutes and that was that. It's now got a new

rear square 08 plate on it.

Warning!!!!

Any how I got about 10 miles on the clock when it started smoking

bad. I stopped when some one started honking at me. I had a look to

find fire coming out from under the car from the exhaust. So I stop

Just an update to let those of you who are still wheel less know that our supplier is visiting us next Wednesday 16th July to collect payment enabling the hubs to be shipped. We will add a further update once we've met him.

This has all been made possible due to the generosity of one of our customers who has funded the early payment. Many thanks to him.

Whilst driving the Lika the other day, in forward gear, the ride became increasingly jerky, but it was OK in reverse. I found that steam was not entering the top of the left cylinder in forward, but was in reverse. Mystified, I thought the return crank had slipped (square peg in square hole turning into round peg in square hole). It hadn't, so I opened up the left steam chest and found the top lock nuts had come loose. so the valve rod was somehow driving the valve OK in reverse but not in forward. ...

Having completed my Lika, with many thanks to Steve for his help and support, I have made the following modifications:-

Converted the burner to run on paraffin (kerosine), using a 1.75gal/hour nozzle, fuel pressure 160psi. This burns much cleaner, is cheaper than diesel and has a higher calorific value.

Fitted drain valves to top and bottom of both cylinders as I was having trouble with hydraulic lock from condensed steam when starting off from cold.

Fitted an air bottle into the boiler ...

Hello everyone building a Likamobile.

I have purchased all kits but the wheel kits (4a and 4b) have not been delivered. I hope that Steve and Dean can resurrect the road vehicle business from the administrators but I still need details of wheels, hubs, drive adaptors and brake discs so that I can make them if I have to. Thanks to Tom Carder from Barnstaple for the offer of help to date. My Lika has completed steam tests and now has a full boiler certificate. If I can help anyone up to this ...
