Builders beware! The male input thread on my steam head just received in Kit 21 was considerably oversize. Having got it assembled on the spectacle plate and offered up to the steam pipe from the boiler the female fitting wouldn't even start on the thread. I took it off again and tried one of the fittings on one of the pipeworks in the kit with similar results, although it screwed on to one of the globe valve threads easily. I measured the OD of the steam head and globe valve threads to find ...

How do I get out of this one? I have found that my waterpump feedpipe (the one in the tender with a filter on the end) has become loose. It will turn easily in the union nut and I can rattle it a bit. This might explain why my pump suddenly stops working on a roadrun especially when the water level in the tender has dropped from full. It sems to start sucking air. I have tried to tighten up the union nut with a standard spanner by poking my hand through the hole in the tender top but can't tighten ...

Hi

On the neverending quest to get my engine perfect I was wondering why the piston is made of steel and not alluminium. It is a lot of weight changing direction all the time and in car engines they are all ally so why not in a steam engine? One or two of the guys at the Launceston rally I have just returned from have made & fitted ally pistons to make them smoother so is it worth doing the same?

If anyone has a view I would be interested in hearing it

The floor is now open!

Today i fitted the cylinder to the boiler came across a problem when fitting the studs under the cylinder drain. I shortened these by about 2mm inserted from the under side and locked 2 nuts on and put the cylinder on then screwed the studs in. may be these studs should be fitted first rather than the top studs in the instructions? Also the blast pipe hole is only about 6mm it seems a lot small than in the picture is this correct.

The new flywheel is in cast steel, 1" smaller diameter and 1lb heavier. It has a run out of 2 thou on the diameter & 10 thou wobble. Good enough I think!

Hi everyone.

Have a look at the 4" Burrell Products Page on the main website. You can now download the full design. Save the download to your desktop or where ever you prefer, but save it with the file extension .easm. You will need to have previously downloaded the eDrawings viewer. You should be able to see every part, do cross sections, hide parts, create perspective views etc.

A few of the components have changed a bit since we made the file available, notably the water pump ...
